Hong Kong Events - July 2027

July 2027 is school holidays, the Book Fair and the hottest stretch of the year. HKSAR Establishment Day falls on Thursday 1 July, and the Hong Kong Book Fair takes over the Convention Centre from 14 to 20 July — the biggest annual book event in the region, and one of the few Hong Kong happenings that fills the Wan Chai waterfront for a whole week. Ani-Com and Games is expected at the end of the month. For Temple Street, July is a night-only pleasure: the stalls come out later, the seafood and beer trade peaks after nine, and the fortune-tellers and the evening opera in the square have the largest audiences of the year. The museums, all air-conditioned, are the daytime answer.

🧭 Practical notes for July

  • Heat: July is the hottest month of the year, with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Plan the market for after dark and carry water.
  • Book Fair week: hotels in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay fill for 14-20 July. If you are in Kowloon you are insulated from the worst of it, and the MTR gets you there in one ride from Jordan.
  • Getting there: Jordan MTR is the closest station to the market. See how to get here.
  • Timing: check the opening hours and closing time pages before a special trip.
  • Entry and prices: free to walk; food and readings are paid and any quoted price is indicative. See the 2027 food guide.
  • Free alternatives: the Tin Hau Temple and the Hong Kong Museum of Art in TST, both free and both a break from the heat.
  • Before you travel: summer dates firm up through the spring — check Discover Hong Kong and the best time to visit.

Get to the Night Market

Visitors and locals alike congregate in the evenings in Hong Kong's last remaining Night Market. The Night Market at Temple Street has been a fixture of the Jordan/Yau Ma Tei district since at least the 1920s and probably before.

Today it boasts market stalls with fashions and accessories, seafood and claypot rice in traditional Dai Pai Dong restaurants, fortunetellers and tarot card readers, and Cantonese Opera singers. Nowhere else in Hong Kong is such an interesting cross section of Hong Kong culture, cuisine, commerce and society to be found.
