Hong Kong Events - April 2027

April 2027 belongs to the Hong Kong Sevens, which take over Kai Tak Stadium from 9 to 11 April, and to one date that matters more than any other on this street: the Tin Hau Festival on Thursday 29 April, the birthday of the goddess the Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau Temple is named for. The temple sits at the northern end of Temple Street, and the festival is marked there with worship and Cantonese opera. Ching Ming, the tomb-sweeping holiday, falls on Monday 5 April, and the arts calendar keeps going with the Philharmonic and the ballet. Weather-wise it is the last comfortable month before the humidity sets in, which makes it a good one for the evening market.

🏉 The big dated events

Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens

📅 Friday 9 - Sunday 11 April 2027

Three days of rugby sevens at Kai Tak Stadium, opening the HSBC SVNS World Championship.

Why go: Hong Kong's best party weekend of the year, and this is its first full run at the new stadium — tickets and hotels go early, so plan both at once.

📍 Location: Kai Tak Stadium, Kai Tak Sports Park

🎟️ Cost: Ticketed — hksevens.com

🏷️ Categories: SPORTS, RUGBY

🗓️ Status: Confirmed for 9-11 April 2027

Tin Hau Festival

📅 Thursday, 29 April 2027

The birthday of Tin Hau, the goddess of the sea, and the day the Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau Temple that gives this street its name is the centre of it. More than 80 temples across Hong Kong mark it with worship and Cantonese opera.

Why go: the market's own festival — you are already on the right street. Come for the temple in the morning and stay for the evening trade.

📍 Location: Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau Temple, Temple Street, and temples across Hong Kong

🎟️ Cost: Free

🏷️ Categories: TRADITIONAL, FESTIVAL

🗓️ Status: Date confirmed for 29 April 2027. The local programme — processions and opera at the temple — is not published in advance, so check nearer the day.

Ching Ming Festival

📅 Monday, 5 April 2027

The tomb-sweeping holiday, when families visit graves and make offerings.

Why go: not a visitor event, but it is a public holiday — expect family crowds at the market in the evening and a quieter city during the day.

📍 Location: Hong Kong-wide; the market is open as usual

🎟️ Cost: Free

🏷️ Categories: HOLIDAY, TRADITIONAL

🗓️ Status: Confirmed public holiday for Monday 5 April 2027

🎻 Concerts and stage

Hong Kong Philharmonic - Peltokoski conducts Mahler 2

📅 Friday 2 April 2027 at 07:30 PM and Saturday 3 April at 05:00 PM

Tarmo Peltokoski conducts Mahler's Resurrection Symphony at the Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Why go: the big orchestral event of the spring, in a hall on the doorstep of the market district. The Saturday performance is the easier one to pair with an evening on Temple Street.

🧭 Practical notes for April

  • Sevens weekend: Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and the Kai Tak area are the busiest they get; if you are staying in Kowloon, book far ahead. The market itself is unaffected and unusually easy to walk on the Sunday.
  • Tin Hau Festival: the temple at the north end of Temple Street is busiest in the morning of 29 April. Expect the street to be crowded into the evening; arrive with cash.
  • Getting there: Jordan MTR is the closest station. See how to get here.
  • Timing: the market trades every evening and is liveliest after dark. Check the opening hours and closing time pages.
  • Entry and prices: free to walk; food and readings are paid and any quoted price is indicative. See the 2027 food guide, fortune-telling and the opera page.
  • Free alternatives: the Tin Hau Temple, the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market and the Hong Kong Museum of Art in TST are all free.
  • Before you travel: festival and Sevens details firm up through the winter — check Discover Hong Kong and the best time to visit.

Get to the Night Market

Visitors and locals alike congregate in the evenings in Hong Kong's last remaining Night Market. The Night Market at Temple Street has been a fixture of the Jordan/Yau Ma Tei district since at least the 1920s and probably before.

Today it boasts market stalls with fashions and accessories, seafood and claypot rice in traditional Dai Pai Dong restaurants, fortunetellers and tarot card readers, and Cantonese Opera singers. Nowhere else in Hong Kong is such an interesting cross section of Hong Kong culture, cuisine, commerce and society to be found.
