Hong Kong Events - January 2027
January at Temple Street is the run-up to Lunar New Year. The market trades every evening as normal, the claypot-rice and hotpot stalls are at their best in the cool dry weather, and fortune-telling goes into its busiest season as people come for a reading before the new year starts. Chinese New Year Day 1 falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, so from the last week of January the street begins to turn red and gold. City-wide it is also a strong month: the big winter exhibitions are in their closing weeks, the arena calendar restarts, and the Standard Chartered Marathon closes the month's biggest Sunday.
🎆 The big dated events
Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon

Pre-New Year evenings at Temple Street
📅 Late January 2027 — annual pattern, no fixed date
Through the fortnight or so before the holiday the market fills with festive food, new-year decorations and lion-dance energy, and the Tin Hau Temple draws worshippers.
Why go: the atmosphere without the full New Year crush — both prices and crowds climb sharply once February starts.
📍 Location: Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei / Jordan

🧭 Practical notes for January
- Getting there: Jordan MTR station is the closest stop to the market. See the site's how to get here page for exits and the walking route.
- Timing: Temple Street trades every evening, and the food stalls and fortune-tellers are busiest after dark. Check the opening hours and closing time pages, which are updated when the pattern changes.
- Entry and prices: walking the market is free. Fortune readings are paid and vary by reader — treat any quoted figure as indicative. Stall prices are negotiable, so start low. See the fortune-telling page and the 2027 food guide.
- Book ahead: the two arena shows and the Yo-Yo Ma concert will be gone long before January. The New Year fairs need no ticket but are most crowded on their final evenings.
- Free alternatives: the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market and the Tin Hau Temple are free and a few minutes' walk from the stalls, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art in Tsim Sha Tsui is free to enter.
- Before you travel: 2027 dates are announced by organisers through late 2026 and do change. Check Discover Hong Kong or Time Out Hong Kong, and see the best time to visit for how the market changes through the year.
